Malala Day

July 12 is observed as International Malala Day to salute the Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who works for women's right to education across the globe. Born in Swat Valley, Malala was never permitted to enter school as the Taliban had banned girls from going to school in Pakistan. 

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani female education activist and the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize laureate at the age of 17. She is the world's youngest Nobel Prize laureate, the second Pakistani and the first Pashtun to receive a Nobel Prize.


1630- New Amsterdam’s governor buys Gull Island from Indians for cargo

The Governor of New Amsterdam bought Gull Island from Indians for cargo then renamed it Oyster Island and later renamed it Ellis Island.


1823 – The first steamship built in India ‘Diana’ was unveiled in Calcutta

Diana was a steam paddle steamer built in 1823 as a merchant vessel and purchased by the Bengal Government in 1824. During the First Anglo-Burmese War she became the first steam-powered warship of the Honourable East India Company to see action.


1920 - The independent republic of Lithuania, having successfully expelled invading Soviet troops, signed a peace treaty with Russia.


1943 – Russia defeated the Nazis in the Battle of Prochorovka


1949 - After the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the ban imposed on the RSS was conditionally lifted.

Vidya Subrahmaniam asserts that Sardar Patel lifted the ban on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1949, because it had promised to be non-political, but it reneged on it in 2013.


1960 – Bhagalpur and Ranchi Universities were established.

1. 2012 - Dara Singh

Dara Singh Randhawa was an Indian professional wrestler, actor, director and politician. He started acting in 1952 and was the first sportsman to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha of India. He worked as Hindi and Punjabi film producer, director and writer, and he acted in films and television.

2. 2013 - Pran Sikand
Pran Krishan Sikand Ahluwalia, better known by his mononym, Pran, was an Indian actor, known as the greatest villain ever in the history of Indian cinema and character actor in Hindi cinema from the 1940s to the 1990s.
