World Population Day

World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11 every year, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The United Nations Development Programme's Governing Council created World Population Day in 1989 as a result of the interest aroused by the Day of Five Billion, which was marked on July 11, 1987.


1798 - The U.S. Marine Corps, originally established in 1775, was formally reestablished.


1892 - US Patent Office says Joseph Swan rather than Thomas Edison, invented the electric light carbon for the incandescent lamp


1900 - First Woman to Win Individual Olympic Gold Medal

Charlotte Cooper (English tennis player) won a gold medal, making her the first individual female Olympic champion.


1960 - American author Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird was published and became a classic, noted for its sensitive treatment of a child's awakening to racism and prejudice in the South.


2006 - Mumbai Train Bombings Anniversary

The Bombay terrorist attack on trains killed more than 160 people and injures a further 460 when seven bombs are detonated on the train network in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai. The blasts were said to be carried out by members of the radical group Students Islamic Movement of India.


2011 - Neptune completes its first orbit since its discovery on September 23, 1846.


2015 - Mexican criminal Joaquín Guzmán, who was head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, escaped from prison, using a lengthy underground tunnel; a massive manhunt followed, and he was captured again some six months later.


2022 - NASA and US President Joe Biden reveal first image from James Webb Space Telescope, cluster of galaxies called SMACS 0723 four billion light-years away, as they appeared 13 billion years ago

1. 1956 - Amitav Ghosh

Amitav Ghosh is an Indian writer. He won the 54th Jnanpith award in 2018, India's highest literary honor. Ghosh's ambitious novels use complex narrative strategies to probe the nature of national and personal identity, particularly of the people of India and South Asia.

1. 2003 - Bhisham Sahni

Bhisham Sahni was an Indian writer, playwright in Hindi and an actor, most famous for his novel and television screenplay Tamas, a powerful and passionate account of the Partition of India. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan for literature in 1998, and Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2002.
