1693 - First Women Magazine Published

The first women’s magazine “Ladies’ Mercury” was published in London.


1871 - Yen made official monetary unit of Japan

First minted in 1869, the yen was adopted as Japan's official monetary unit this day in 1871, when the government suspended the exchange of clan notes, money issued by feudal lords that had circulated since the 16th century.


1954 - The world's first nuclear power plant is activated

The reactor at Obninsk in present-day Russia remained in operation for 49 years. Today, there are some 400 atomic power plants worldwide. The technology remains controversial, especially due to the unsolved long-term storage of the highly dangerous nuclear waste.


1964 - Teen Murti Bhavan, which was the official residence of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, was converted into the Nehru Memorial Museum


1977 - Djibouti gained its independence from France.


2007 - James Garden Brown took over as British Prime Minister. British Prime Minister Tony Blair handed over his resignation letter to Queen Elizabeth.


2015 - The United Nations decided to display a picture of Satyajit Ray, who has a special place in the film history of India, at its headquarters.

1. 1939 - R. D. Burman
Rahul Dev Burman was an Indian music director and actor, who is considered one of the greatest and most successful music directors of Hindi Music Industry. From the 1960s to the 1990s, Burman composed musical scores for 331 films, bringing a new level of music ensemble with his compositions.

2. 1964 - P.T. Usha

Pilavullakandi Thekkeraparambil Usha is a retired Indian track and field athlete. She was born in Kuthali, Kozhikode, Kerala. She has been associated with Indian athletics since 1979. She has won 4 Asian gold medals and 7 Silver medals. She is often associated as the "Queen of Indian track and field"

1. 1839 - Maharaja Ranjit Singh

Ranjit Singh, popularly known as Sher-e-Punjab or "Lion of Punjab", was the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, which ruled the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19th century. He survived smallpox in infancy but lost sight in his left eye. He fought his first battle alongside his father at age 10.

2. 2008 - Sam Manekshaw
Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw MC, widely known as Sam Manekshaw and Sam Bahadur, was the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, and the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of field marshal.
