World Refugee Day

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided that 20 June would be celebrated as World Refugee Day from 2001 onwards to raise awareness about the struggles that refugees face around the world. World Refugee Day also marks a key moment for the public to show support for families forced to flee.


1756 - Black hole of Calcutta

Around 146 British soldiers were captured by Sirad ud-Daulah's (Nawab of Bengal) men. The Biritish prisoners of war were held in a small dark chamber called the Black hole of Calcutta. Around 123 britishers in the cell died due to suffocation, heat exhaustion and crushing in cramped situations.


1791 - French Revolution

King Louis XVI and the French royal family are caught during an attempt to flee Paris during the French Revolution, severely undermining their credibility.


1837 - Queen Victoria at 18 ascends British throne following death of uncle King William IV. She rules for 63 years till 1901.


1866 - Italy declares war on Austria beginning the Third Italian War of Independence.


1867 - US President Andrew Johnson announces the Alaska Purchase

In Alaska, the Americans foresaw a potential for gold, fur and fisheries, as well as more trade with China and Japan. The Americans worried that England might try to establish a presence in the territory, and the acquisition of Alaska – it was believed – would help the U.S. become a Pacific power.


1887 - Victoria Terminus, now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus established

Designed by the British architect Frederick William Stevens, Victoria Terminus was constructed in the Gothic Revival style, combining elements of Victorian and traditional Indian architecture. The station was named in honor of Queen Victoria, the then Empress of India.


1963 - US & USSR agree to set up "Hot Line"

The United States and the Soviet Union had agreed in 1963 to establish, for use in time of emergency, a direct communications link between the two governments.


1985 - Mother Teresa was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the then President Ronald Reagan.It is a medal that is bestowed upon by the President of the United States to any worthy individual.


1992 - A new constitution went into effect in Paraguay, signaling the end of military rule established in the 1950s by Alfredo Stroessner.

1. 1952 - Vikram Seth
Vikram Seth CBE, FRSL is an Indian novelist and poet. He has written several novels and poetry books. He has won several awards such as Padma Shri, Sahitya Academy Award, Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, WH Smith Literary Award and Crossword Book Award.

2. 1958 - Draupadi Murmu
Droupadi Murmu is an Indian politician and former teacher who is serving as the 15th and current President of India since 2022. She is the first person belonging to the tribal community and also the second woman after Pratibha Patil to hold the office. She is also the youngest person to occupy the post and the first President born in Independent India.

3. 1972 - Rahul Khanna
Rahul Khanna is an Indian actor, VJ and writer who works in Bollywood. He is the elder son of actor Vinod Khanna and the elder brother of Akshaye Khanna.

4. 1987 - Shoaib Ibrahim
Shoaib Ibrahim is an Indian actor who works in Hindi television. He is known for playing Prem Bhardwaj in Colors TV's popular show Sasural Simar Ka. In 2017 he participated in Star Plus's dance reality show Nach Baliye 8.
