1956 - The Hindu Succession Act passed

The Hindu Succession Act of the Parliament of India was passed on this day. The law was about the uniform system of inheritance.


1978 - The Karakoram Highway opened today. It is known as the highest paved international road in the world and connects China and Pakistan. The 1,300 km highway is named "Karakoram" as it passes through the Karakoram mountain range.


1980 - Indian "human computer" Shakuntala Devi sets a world record by mentally multiplying two random 13-digit numbers in 28 seconds; She correctly answered that 7,686,369,774,870 × 2,465,099,745,779 = 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730 !


1983 - The first American woman to fly into outer space, Sally Ride, was launched with four other astronauts aboard the space shuttle Challenger.


2006 - Prelate Katharine Jefferts Schori was elected presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America, becoming the first woman chosen as a churchwide leader in the 400-year history of the Anglican Communion.

1. 1858 - Rani Lakshmibai

Rani Laxmi Bai popularly known as Jhansi ki Rani was born as Manikarnika Tambe in the year 1828 on 19 November. Rani Lakshmibai fought against the British Army and became an inspirational figure in the Indian freedom struggle. She died on 18 June in 1858 due to injuries sustained in a battle against the British forces.
