World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (International)
Since 1995, this day is observed to spread awareness about international cooperation to combat desertification and the effects of drought. The United Nations General Assembly in 1994 declared 17 June as the "World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought". It is a unique occasion to remind people that desertification can be effectively tackled, solutions are possible and important is participation and cooperation at all levels.
1631 - Mumtaz Mahal died
Mumtaz Mahal, wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahān, died during childbirth, and in her memory he built the Taj Mahal, the most famous building in India.
1756 - Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah attacked Calcutta with 50,000 soldiers and captured it on June 21.
1885 - Statue of Liberty arrives in NYC aboard French ship `Isere'
After the Statue was presented to Levi P Morton, the U.S. minister to France, on July 4, 1884 in Paris, it was disassembled and shipped to the United States aboard the French Navy ship, Isère. The Statue arrived in New York Harbor on June 17, 1885, and was met with great fanfare.
1940 - The Soviet occupation and incorporation
On June 17, 1940, Latvia was invaded by the Red Army. On June 20 the formation of a new government was announced; on July 21 the new Saeima voted for the incorporation of Latvia into the U.S.S.R.; and on August 5 the U.S.S.R. accepted this incorporation.
1944 - Iceland declared itself a republic
When German forces occupied Denmark in 1940, Iceland assumed control over its own foreign affairs and gradually moved toward complete independence from Denmark. Following a plebiscite, Iceland formally became an independent republic on June 17, 1944.
1961 - India’s 1st Jet Aircraft Took Flight
The HAL HF-24 Marut ("Spirit of the Tempest") was an Indian fighter-bomber aircraft of the 1960s. Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), with Kurt Tank as lead designer. The Project Engineer from HAL was George William Benjamin. It is the first Indian-developed jet aircraft, and the first Asian jet fighter (outside Russia/Soviet Union) to go beyond the test phase and into successful production and active service. On 17 June 1961, the type conducted its maiden flight; on 1 April 1967, the first production Marut was officially delivered to the IAF.
1967 - China successfully tested its first thermonuclear (hydrogen) bomb.
1985 - 18th NASA Space Shuttle Mission (51-G): Discovery 5 launches
STS-51-G was the 18th flight of NASA's Space Shuttle program, and the fifth flight of Space Shuttle Discovery. The seven-day mission launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on June 17, 1985, and landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on June 24, 1985.
2021 - China launches its Shenzhou-12 spacecraft with three astronauts arriving at its new space station Tiangong six and a half hours later.
