World Blood Donor Day

Every year countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.


1. 1381 - Richard II in England meets leaders of the Peasants' Revolt on Blackheath. The Tower of London is stormed by rebels who enter without resistance.


2. 1658 - Battle of the Dunes: English and French forces defeat the Spanish near Dunkirk during Franco-Spanish War.


3. 1777 - The Continental Congress approved the Stars and Stripes as the first national flag of the United States, designed by Francis Hopkinson, replacing the Grand Union flag.


4. 1807 - Napoleon won the Battle of Friedland, leading to a treaty with Alexander I of Russia.


5. 1928 -  Che Guevara—a theoretician and tactician of guerrilla warfare, a prominent communist figure in the Cuban Revolution (1956–59), and a guerrilla leader in South America—was born.


6. 1938 - Chlorophyll patented by Benjamin Grushkin.


7. 1940 - First prisoners at Auschwitz

On this day in 1940, the first transport of Polish political prisoners arrived at Auschwitz, which became Nazi Germany's largest concentration, extermination, and slave-labour camp, where more than one million people died.


8. 1942 - Anne Frank begins her diary.


9. 1957 - Dr. C.V. Raman was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in the Kremlin.


10. 1975 -  USSR launches Venera 10 for Venus landing.

Venera 10, which entered orbit around Venus on Oct. 23, 1975 and landed two days later, sent back black-and-white images of flattened lava rocks and measured the speed of the wind at the surface.


11. 1982 - Argentina surrenders to Great Britain, ending the 74-day Falklands Islands conflict.


12. 2013 - The US government charges NSA leaker Edward Snowden with violating the Espionage Act and theft of government property.


13. 2019 - Petition to create world's first "time free zone" on Sommaroy island which has complete daylight for 2 months, delivered to the Norwegian parliament.


14. 2021 - Cristiano Ronaldo removes sponsors coke bottles from his press table at the European Championships, prompting the company share price to drop $4 billion.


15. 2022 - Denmark and Canada agree to split the arctic Hans Island, ending their 50-year "Whiskey War", where each country laid claim by buying whiskey on the island.

1. 1967 - Kumar Mangalam Birla

Kumar Mangalam Birla is an Indian billionaire Industrialist, philanthropist, and the chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, one of the largest global conglomerates in India. He is the chancellor of the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani and ex Chairman of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.

2. 1968 - Raj Thackeray
Raj Shrikant Thackeray (born Swararaj Shrikant Thackeray) is an Indian politician and the founding chairperson of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), a regional political party. Raj was a former member of Shiv Sena till he founded MNS in 2006. He is the nephew of Balasaheb Thackeray.

3. 1970 - Akbaruddin Owaisi
Akbaruddin Owaisi is an Indian politician and leader of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party in Telangana. Since 2014, he has been MLA of the Chandrayangutta constituency in the Telangana Legislative Assembly. Owaisi was appointed as the Chairman of Telangana Public Accounts Committee in 2019.

4. 1989 - Jubin Nautiyal
Jubin Nautiyal is an Indian playback singer and live performer. In June 2022, he won the IIFA award for “Playback Singer ” for the song “Raataan Lambiyan.” He was awarded Upcoming Male Vocalist of the Year at 8th Mirchi Music Awards for his song "Zindagi Kuch Toh Bata" from Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

1. 1918 - Fakir Mohan Senapati
Fakir Mohan Senapati, often referred to as Utkala Byasa Kabi, was an Indian writer, poet, philosopher and social reformer. He played a leading role in establishing the distinct identity of Odia, a language mainly spoken in the Indian state of Odisha.

2. 2020 - Sushant Singh Rajput
Sushant Singh Rajput was an Indian actor known for his work in Hindi cinema. He starred in a number of commercially successful Hindi films such as M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Kedarnath and Chhichhore.
