International Albinism Awareness Day 

Every year on June 13th, International Albinism Awareness Day celebrates the rights of human beings born with albinism and aims to increase awareness and understanding of this genetic condition.


1. 1897 - Finnish track athlete Paavo Nurmi—who dominated long-distance running in the 1920s, capturing nine gold medals in three Olympic Games (1920, 1924, 1928)—was born.


2. 1914 - Eleftherios Venizelos announces that Greece intends to annex Chios and Mytilene, two large islands off the Turkish coast; Greece and Turkey have been heading towards conflict for months over claims to Aegean islands.


3. 1920 US Post Office says children cannot be sent by parcel post (after various instances).


4. 1981 - Teenager fires 6 blank rounds at Queen Elizabeth II

On 13 June 1981, Sarjeant joined the crowds for Trooping the Colour, finding a spot near the junction between The Mall and Horseguards Road. When the Queen came past riding her 19-year-old horse Burmese, Sarjeant quickly fired six blanks from his starting pistol.


5. 1982 - Following the death of his half brother Khalid, Fahd became king of Saudi Arabia, overseeing a period of modernization in the country.


6. 1983 - NASA's Pioneer 10 becomes the 1st man-made object to leave the solar system.

Pioneer 10 (originally designated Pioneer F) is a NASA space probe launched in 1972 that completed the first mission to the planet Jupiter. Pioneer 10 became the first of five artificial objects to achieve the escape velocity needed to leave the Solar System. This space exploration project was conducted by the NASA Ames Research Center in California.


7. 1997 - Uphaar Cinema Tragedy

A fire broke out at Uphaar Cinema in Delhi, killing 59 people and injuring over 50. The fire started on Friday, 13 June 1997 at Uphaar Cinema in Green Park, Delhi during the three o'clock screening of the movie Border.


8. 2000 - Historic meeting between North and South Korean leaders

On this day in 2000, South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung met North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in a summit that marked the first meeting between heads of the two countries, helping earn Kim Dae-Jung the Nobel Peace Prize.


9. 2003 - English county cricket teams play the 1st official Twenty20 matches.

1. 1879 - Ganesh Damodar Savarkar
Ganesh Dāmodar Sāvarkar, also called Babarao Savarkar, was an Indian politician, activist, nationalist, and founder of the Abhinav Bharat Society.

2. 1964 - Piyush Goyal 

Piyush Goyal is an Indian politician having portfolios such as Minister of Textiles, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Currently a Member of Parliament for Rajya Sabha from the state of Maharashtra, he is also the current Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha.

3. 1992 - Disha Patani
Disha Patani is an Indian actress who is known for her work in Hindi films. She began her acting career with the Telugu film Loafer. She had her first Hindi film release with the biopic M.S.

4. 1994 - Deepika Kumari
Deepika Kumari is an Indian professional archer. Currently ranked the World No. 2, she competes in the event of archery. She won a gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth games in the women's individual recurve event.
