World Day Against Child Labor

Every year on June 12 the World Day Against Child Labor is observed to raise awareness of the plight of child laborers world-wide. Hundreds of millions of girls and boys around the world are affected. This year, the theme for World Day Against Child Labour is 'Social Justice for All. End Child Labour!'. It emphasized the link between social justice and child labour


1. 1701 - The Act of Settlement, the law that continues to regulate the succession to the throne of the United Kingdom, was passed by Parliament.


2. 1707 - Bahādur Shah I won the Mughal throne of India by defeating his brother ʿAẓam Shah at the Battle of Jajau.


3. 1897 - Possibly the most severe quake in history strikes Assam, India, Shock waves felt over an area size of Europe (low mortality rate given size of earthquake, 1,500 casualties).


4. 1898 - Philippines became an independent nation
After the U.S. declared war on Spain, Aguinaldo saw a possibility that the Philippines might achieve its independence; the U.S. hoped instead that Aguinaldo would lend his troops to its effort against Spain. He returned to Manila on May 19, 1898 and declared Philippine independence on June 12.

5. 1942 - The Diary of Anne Frank
On her 13th birthday this day, Anne Frank received a diary. She wrote her experiences in it during the German occupation of Netherlands in the World War II which later was released posthumously after her death titled 'The Diary of a Young Girl'

6. 1964 - Anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of 'sabotage' in South Africa.

7. 1967 - USSR launches Venera 4 for parachute landing on Venus.

8. 1990 - INSAT-1D was launched
The specification for the INSAT-1D is the same as the INSAT-1B but with expanded battery and propellant capacities, launched on 12 June 1990 to conclude the first generation INSAT series

9. 1991 - Election of Boris Yeltsin
On this day in 1991, Boris Yeltsin was easily elected president of Russia (then part of the Soviet Union) in the republic's first direct, popular elections, and he was president of independent Russia until the eve of 2000.

10. 2004 - A 1.3 kilogram chondrite type meteorite strikes a house in Ellerslie, New Zealand causing serious damage but no injuries.

11. 2012 - The chemical compound NOTT-202, which is capable of selectively absorbing carbon dioxide, is created.

12. 2016 - The deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history up to that time occurred when Omar Mateen opened fire at Pulse, an LGBTQ nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people and wounding more than 50.

13. 2019 -  Violent protests in Hong Kong as tens of thousands of protesters block and try to storm government buildings to stop extradition law.


Famous People's Birthday on June 12

1. 1919 - Gopal Godse
Gopal Vinayak Godse was a Hindutva activist convicted of conspiring to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi in 1948.

2. 1932 - E. Sreedharan
Elattuvalapil Sreedharan is an Indian engineer and politician from the Indian state of Kerala. He is credited with changing the face of public transport in India with his leadership in building the Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro. Known as the Metro Man, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2001,[2] the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

3. 1949 - Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma
Sree Padmanabhadasa Sree Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma is the current pretender to the throne of Travancore. He is the youngest of the four children of the former titular Maharani of Travancore, Sree Padmanabhasevini Maharani Karthika Thirunal Lakshmi Bayi and her husband, Prince Consort Lt. Col. G. V. Raja of Poonjar Royal House.

4. 1975 - Anjana Om Kashyap
Anjana Om Kashyap is an Indian news anchor working with Hindi news channel Aaj Tak as a Senior Executive Editor. Kashyap started her journalistic career by joining the public broadcaster Doordarshan before moving to Zee News. She then went to News 24 before settling into Aaj Tak.

5. 1985 - Saba Anjum Karim
aba Anjum is a former member of the Indian women's hockey team. She was the youngest of all participants in hockey competition at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. She first played for India in under-18 AHF Cup in 2000.
