1489- Nizam Shah was crowned Sultan of Delhi.

Sikandar Khan Lodi, the second son of Bahlul, succeeded him after his death on 17 July 1489 and took up the title Sikandar Shah.


1712: England, Portugal and France sign an armistice.

The Peace of Utrecht was a series of peace treaties signed by the belligerents in the War of the Spanish Succession, in the Dutch city of Utrecht between April 1713 and February 1715. The war involved three contenders for the vacant throne of Spain, and involved much of Europe for over a decade.


1936 - Beginning of the Spanish Civil War

A well-planned uprising by Nationalist rebels against the Republican government of Spain began this day in 1936, sparking a bloody civil war that lasted until 1939, when the Nationalists and Francisco Franco assumed power.


1948- Women in the country were declared eligible in any type of civil services

Women are underrepresented in the senior civil service. 43% of senior civil servants are women, although this has increased from 17% in 1996.Women representation in Civil services has increased from 46% in 1991, to 54% in 2018.


1955- Disneyland opens its doors for the first time

Disneyland opened its gates for the first time with 18 rides and attractions and five lands including Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland and Main Street USA.


1996- Madras became Chennai

On July 17, 1996, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M Karunanidhi announced that from then on Madras would be known as Chennai. The name ‘Chennai’ is said to be derived from Chennaipattanam, a small town near Fort St George, built by the British in 1639.


1998- The United Nations completed the statute establishing the International Criminal Court, which began sittings four years later.


2014 - Malaysia Airlines flight 17 crashed in separatist-held territory in Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board; a Dutch investigation later determined that the aircraft was shot down by a Russian-made surface-to-air missile.


Famous People's Birthday on July 17

1. 1947 - Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon
Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, PVC was an officer of the Indian Air Force. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration during war time, in recognition of his lone defence of Srinagar Air Base against a Pakistan Air Force air raid during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

2. 1957 - Admiral Sunil Lanba
Admiral Sunil Lanba, PVSM, AVSM, PJG, ADC is a retired Indian naval officer who served as the 23rd Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy. He assumed the office on 31 May 2016 after Admiral Robin K. Dhowan and demitted office three years later on 31 May 2019.

3. 1969- Ravi Kishan

Ravi Kishan Shukla, popularly known as Ravi Kishan, is an Indian actor, politician, film producer and television personality. He currently serves as Member of parliament, Lok Sabha from Gorakhpur. His film works are predominantly in Bhojpuri and Hindi cinema, as well as Telugu cinema.

4. 1994 - Ananya Birla
Ananyashree Birla is an Indian singer, songwriter and entrepreneur. Since her debut single in 2016, Birla has reached more than 350 million combined streams and collaborated with artists including Sean Kingston, Afrojack, and Mood Melodies.
