1401 - Turko-Mongol ruler Tamerlane (Timur) destroys Baghdad, killing 20,000

1762 - Catherine the Great assumed power

Catherine the Great overthrew Peter III on this day in 1762 and began her reign as empress of Russia, leading her country into full participation in the political and cultural life of Europe and extending Russian territory.


1816 - Argentine Declaration of Independence

The Congress of Tucumán proclaimed what is now referred to as Argentina's Independence. Officially, the United Provinces of South America, one of the formal names of the Argentine Republic, was declared independent by the lawmakers gathered at Tucumán. The United Provinces and the Federal League Provinces, which were at war, were not permitted to attend the Congress.


1856 - Nikola Tesla Birthday

Nikola Tesla—a Serbian American inventor and researcher who discovered the rotating magnetic field, the basis of most alternating-current machinery—was born this day or the next in Smiljan, Croatia.


1875 - Bombay Stock Exchange Established

BSE Limited, also known as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), is an Indian stock exchange which is located on Dalal Street in Mumbai. Established in 1875 by cotton merchant Premchand Roychand, it is the oldest stock exchange in Asia, and also the tenth oldest in the world.


1877 - First ever Wimbledon tennis championship begins - first official lawn tennis tournament - men's singles only


1957 - Discovery of element 102 (Nobelium) announced

Scientists from the Nobel Institute of Physics in Stockholm, Sweden announced the discovery of element 102, naming it nobelium.


1960 - The Thresher, the first of a class of U.S. nuclear-powered attack submarines, was launched; it sank in 1963 in the worst submarine accident in history.


1991 - South Africa re-admitted to Olympics

The South African National Olympic Committee (NOC) was expelled from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1970. In 1991, as part of the transition to multiracial equality, a new NOC was formed and admitted to the IOC, and the country competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona.

2017 - CEO Elon Musk is the first owner of Telsa's first mass market electric car - the Model 3


2018 - According to scientists, bright pink is the world's oldest biological colour. It was produced by tiny cyanobacteria in 1.1bn-year-old marine shale rock from the Taoudeni basin, Mauritania.

1. 1925 - Guru Dutt

Guru Dutt, was an Indian film director, producer, actor, choreographer, and writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of Indian cinema. Dutt was lauded for his artistry, notably his usage of close-up shots, lighting, and depictions of melancholia.

2. 1938 - Sanjeev Kumar
Sanjeev Kumar was an Indian actor. He is well remembered for his versatility and genuine portrayal of his characters. He acted in genres ranging from romantic dramas to thrillers, and was voted the seventh greatest actor of Indian cinema of all time in a poll conducted by Rediff.com.
