World Chocolate Day
World Chocolate Day, sometimes referred to as International Chocolate Day, or just Chocolate Day, is an annual celebration of chocolate, occurring globally on July 7, which some suggest to be the anniversary of the introduction of chocolate to Europe in 1550. The observance of World Chocolate Day dates back to 2009.
1799 - Maharaja Ranjit Conquered Lahore
As the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, which governed the northwest Indian subcontinent in the first half of the 19th century, Ranjit Singh was also known as Sher-e-Punjab or the "Lion of Punjab" and was also known as Sher-e-Punjab. Under his direction, his kingdom expanded throughout the Punjab region through 1839. On this day in 1799, Maharaja Ranjit Singh conquered Lahore.
1896 - Birth of the Indian Cinema
the Lumiere Brothers showcased six films at the Watson Hotel in Mumbai (then Bombay) and this marked the birth of Indian cinema as we know it today. The Lumiere brothers were French Cinematographers who arrived in India after having proved their cinematic excellence in Paris.
1898 - Hawaiian Islands annexed by the United States
The U.S. Congress annexed Hawaii through a joint resolution signed by President William McKinley on this day in 1898, paving the way for the islands to become a territory (1900) and later a U.S. state (1959).
1937 - Chinese and Japanese troops clashed near the Marco Polo Bridge outside Beijing, launching the Second Sino-Japanese War.
1950 - Korean War: UN Security Council establishes the United Nations Command to combat North Korean forces.
1981 - The solar-powered aircraft, Solar Challenger, successfully completes a 163 mile flight across the English Channel.
2005 - The London transit system was struck by coordinated suicide bomb attacks that killed 39 people and injured more than 700.
2019 - Led by Megan Rapinoe, the U.S. women's football (soccer) team defeated the Netherlands to win its fourth World Cup.
2022 - US scientists begin the search for dark matter with a device in a former gold mine in Lead, South Dakota.
