World Zoonoses Day

1885 - Louis Pasteur Tested Rabies Vaccination

Louis Pasteur successfully tested an antirabies vaccine. The principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation, and pasteurisation were discovered by French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur.


1892 - First Indian to be Elected in UK Parliament

Dada Bhai Naoroji became the first Indian to be elected to the UK Parliament.


1935 - 14th Dalai Lama's Birthday

The 14th Dalai Lama, and known to the Tibetan people as Gyalwa Rinpoche, is the current Dalai Lama, also the highest spiritual leader and head of Tibet. He is considered a living Bodhisattva; specifically, an emanation of Avalokiteśvara in Sanskrit and Chenrezig in Tibetan.


1942 - Anne Frank forced into hiding

Anne Frank and her family went into hiding in Amsterdam on this day in 1942 and lived in a secret annex—an experience documented in her diary, which became a classic of war literature—until their capture on August 4, 1944.


1944 - Gandhi addressed as Father of Nation

Mahatma Gandhi was first addressed as ‘Father of the Nation’ by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.


2017 - France announces it will ban petrol and diesel cars by 2040.


2022 - Dramatic day in British politics as more than 40 government ministers and aides withdraw their support from PM Boris Johnson and resign, a 24 hour record.

1. 1901 - Syama Prasad Mukherjee

Syama Prasad Mukherjee was an Indian politician, barrister and academician, who served as India's first Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet. After falling out with Nehru, protesting against the Liaquat-Nehru Pact, Mukherjee resigned from Nehru's cabinet. Mukherjee is also considered the founder of the Bharatiya Janata Party because it is the Bharatiya Jana Sangh's successor.

1. 2002 - Dhirubhai Ambani

Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani was an Indian businessman who founded Reliance Industries in 1958. Ambani took Reliance public in 1977. In 2016, he was honoured posthumously with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honour for his contributions to trade and industry.
