1. 1898 - China leases Hong Kong's new territories to the United Kingdom for 99 years.


2. 1900 - Freedom fighter Birsa Munda died

Birsa Munda(15 November 1875 – 9 June 1900) was an Indian tribal freedom fighter, and folk hero who belonged to the Munda tribe. He spearheaded a tribal religious millenarian movement that arose in the Bengal Presidency (now Jharkhand) in the late 19th century, during the British Raj, thereby making him an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement.


2. 1934 - 1st appearance of Donald Duck in a cartoon, "The Wise Little Hen"


3. 1942 - On this day the residents of the village of Lidice (now in the Czech Republic) were rounded up, most to be massacred the next day in reprisal for the assassination by Czech underground fighters of Reinhard Heydrich, deputy leader of the Nazi paramilitary group SS.


4. 1964 - Lal Bahadur Shastri became Second Prime Minister of India

Shastri was sworn in on 9 June 1964 taking over from the Acting Prime Minister Gulzarilal Nanda. Commanding a strong majority in the Indian Parliament that it had won in the 1962 Indian general election Shastri and the Congress party did not call fresh elections. In his first broadcast as Prime Minister, Shastri said:

        There comes a time in the life of every nation when it stands at the cross-          roads of history and must choose which way to go. But for us there need           be no difficulty or hesitation, no looking to right or left. Our way is straight        and clear – the building up of a socialist democracy at home with freedom        and prosperity for all, and the maintenance of world peace and friendship        with all nations."


5. 1975 - UK House of Commons is broadcast live by radio for first time.


6. 2013 - Edward Snowden publicly makes his identity known as the leaker of NSA documents.


7. 2019 - Over 1 million people protest in Hong Kong over proposed new extradition laws to China in one of largest-ever protests in the city.


8. 2022 - Conjoined twins with a fused brain successfully separated with help of virtual reality in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.


9. 2022 - NASA announces it will begin research into UFOs, focusing on unidentified aerial phenomena (U.A.P.s)

Famous People's Birthday on June 09

 1. 1949 - Kiran Bedi Birthday
Born in 1949, Kiran Bedi is a retired Indian Police Service officer, social activist, and former tennis player. Kiran Bedi became the first woman in India to join the officer ranks the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1972 and was the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry from 28 May 2016 to 16 February 2021. She worked for 35 years before taking voluntary retirement in 2007 as Director-General, Bureau of Police Research and Development.

2. 1993 - Arjun Vajpai Birthday 
Born on this day in 1993, Arjun Vajpai is the youngest Indian and the youngest in the world to climb Mount Everest back in 2010. He climbed in 2010 Mount Everest at the age of 16 years, 11 months and 18 days.

Famous People's Death Anniversary on June 09

 1. 2011 - M F Husain Death Anniversary
On this day in 2011, M F Husain who was an Indian artist known for executing bold, vibrantly coloured narrative paintings in a modified Cubist style died. He was one of the founding members of Bombay Progressive Artists' Group and associated with Modernism.

2. 1716 - Banda Singh Bahadur, legendary Sikh military commander, died
Banda Singh Bahadur (born Lachman Dev) (27 October 1670 – 9 June 1716), was a Sikh warrior and a commander of the Khalsa army. At age 15, he left home to become an ascetic, and was given the name Madho Das Bairagi. After three months of confinement, on 9 June 1716, Banda Singh's eyes were gouged out, his limbs were severed, his skin removed, and then he was killed.
