1848 - U.S. women's suffrage movement begun

On this day in 1848, the women's suffrage movement in the United States was launched with the opening of the Seneca Falls Convention, which sought to gain certain rights and privileges for women, notably the right to vote.


1870 - The French emperor Napoleon III declared war on Prussia, beginning the Franco-German War.


1943 - 500 allied air forces raid Rome during WW II.


1947 - Aung San, Burmese nationalist leader and prime minister, was assassinated in Rangoon (Yangon, Myanmar).


1949 –The king of Tehri Garhwal announces a merger with the Indian Union.


1969 - The Government of India took the decision in 1969 to nationalize 14 major banks of the country.


1974 - The bones of Indian revolutionary Udham Singh were brought from London to New Delhi in 1974.

1. 1827 - Mangal Pandey

Mangal Pandey was an Indian soldier who played a key part in the events immediately preceding the outbreak of the Indian rebellion of 1857. He was a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry regiment of the British East India Company. In 1984, the Indian government issued a postage stamp to remember him.

2. 1961 - Harsha Bhogle
Harsha Bhogle is an Indian cricket commentator and journalist. Bhogle has cemented his reputation as being a personality in the global cricket broadcasting industry.

1. 1968 - Pratap Singh Rao Gaekwad

Shrimant Maharaja Sir Pratap Singh Rao Gaekwad, who belonged to the Gaekwad dynasty of the Marathas, was the ruling Maharaja of Baroda. He succeeded to the throne upon the death of his grandfather Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1939.
