5 June- World Environment Day

World Environment Day is observed every year on 5 June and is celebrated by more than 100 countries. The environment is a major issue, which not only affects the well-being of the people but also hampers economic development throughout the world. The theme of World Environment Day 2023 is “Solutions to plastic pollution”.


1. 1849 - End of Monarchy in Denmark/Danish National Day

The absolute monarchy in Denmark was abolished and replaced by a new constitution that established a constitutional monarchy with a parliament, as well as freedom of the press, religious freedom, and the right to hold meetings and form associations.


2. 1883 - The first Orient Express leaves Paris

On 5 June 1883, the first Express d'Orient left Paris for Vienna via Munich. Vienna remained the terminus until 4 October 1883, when the route was extended to Giurgiu, Romania.


3. 1953 - The new constitution came into force in Denmark on this day

The current constitution is from 1953. It is one of the oldest constitutions in the world. The Constitutional Act has been changed a few times. The wording is general enough to still apply today.


4. 1959 - The first independent government of the State of Singapore is sworn in with Lee Kuan Yew as Prime Minister


5. 1967 - The Six-Day War begins in the Middle East

The Six-Day War or June War, also known as the 1967 Arab–Israeli War or Third Arab–Israeli War, was fought between Israel and a coalition of Arab states from 5 to 10 June 1967.


6. 1975 - Egypt reopened the Suez Canal to international shipping, eight years after it was closed because of the 1967 war with Israel.


7. 1981 - First scientific report on AIDS is published

On June 5, 1981, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes an article in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report describing five cases of a rare lung infection, PCP, in young, otherwise healthy gay men in Los Angeles.

Born on 05 June 1865 at Bandipur in Hooghly District (West Bengal), Satish Chandra Mukherjee was a legendary teacher and pioneer. Along with Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, he established a system of national education in India.

2. 1952 - Mukesh Bhatt, an Indian film producer
Mukesh Bhatt (born 5 June 1952) is an Indian film producer and actor who has produced several Bollywood films. He is the younger brother of Mahesh Bhatt, and also the co-owner of the production company Vishesh Films, set up in 1986.

3. 1972 - Yogi Adityanath
Yogi Adityanath is an Indian Hindu monk and politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party who is serving as the 21st and current Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh since 19 March 2017.

4. 1988 - Ajinkya Rahane
Ajinkya Madhukar Rahane is an Indian international cricketer and former captain and vice-captain of Indian team in test format, who has played for Indian cricket team in all formats as a batsman. He currently captains Mumbai in Ranji trophy. He is also currently playing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

 1. 2009 - Rajeev Motwani, an Indian Computer Scientist
Rajeev Motwani (24 March 1962 – 5 June 2009) was an Indian American professor of Computer Science at Stanford University whose research focused on theoretical computer science.
