Dedicated to informing public opinion about human rights and to securing the release of political prisoners, Amnesty International was founded in London on this day in 1961 and won the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize.


6. 1971 - USSR Mars 3 launched, 1st spacecraft to soft land on Mars.

 

7. 1998 - Pakistan detonates five atom bombs

Pakistan successfully conducted several underground nuclear tests, making it the seventh country to possess nuclear weapons.


8. 1999 - In Milan, Italy, after 22 years of restoration work, Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece "The Last Supper" is put back on display.

 

9. 2008 - The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly of Nepal formally declares Nepal a republic, ending the 240-year reign of the Shah dynasty.

 

10. 2020 - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani calls for new protections for women after the 'honor killing' of a 14-year old by her father

1. 1883 - Vinayak Damodar Savarkar

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (28 May 1883 – 26 February 1966), was an Indian politician, activist, and writer. Savarkar developed the Hindu nationalist political ideology of Hindutva while imprisoned at Ratnagiri in 1922.
